What Makes Balmuri Falls Special

Created by check dam construction across Cauvery river, Balmuri gets its name from Kannada words Bala (right) and Muri (turn) – where the river bends rightward. The 100-meter wide cascade drops just 6 feet, creating ankle-deep pools perfect for children and non-swimmers.

Edmuri Falls, 4 km downstream, represents the river’s left turn (Yeda means left). Both falls feature small Ganesha temples and serve as popular filming locations for Kannada movies including several Dr. Rajkumar classics.

How to Reach Balmuri and Edmuri Falls

From Mysore City: Take Mysore-KRS road. After 10 km, turn right at Belagola village (near cinema theater). Follow village road for 3 km to riverbank.
By KSRTC Bus: Board any KRS-bound bus (Rs.20) from Mysore city bus stand. Get down at Belagola and walk/take shared auto.
From Bangalore: Take Bangalore-Mysore highway. Turn right after Srirangapatna towards Ranganathittu. Balmuri signboards clearly marked.

Swimming and Safety Guidelines

March to August offers safest swimming conditions when water level remains 2-3 feet deep. Check flow before entering – if water reaches your waist, avoid swimming as hidden rocks and sudden depth changes exist.

  • Morning Hours (6-10 AM): Calmest water, fewer crowds
  • Afternoon (11 AM-4 PM): Peak family time, moderate crowds
  • Evening (5-7 PM): Beautiful sunset views, romantic setting
  • Monsoon Season: Avoid completely – dangerous currents

Local’s Verdict

Perfect budget family destination if you enjoy simple pleasures. Not suitable for those seeking adventure or high waterfalls. Best enjoyed as relaxed picnic spot rather than tourist attraction. Kids love the safe shallow water, adults appreciate the peaceful rural setting.
